I would try two things, and they are exactly the opposite. Darkening the eyes so they are completely in shadow, or illuminating them and darkening everything else... This image appears to be about spirituality/religion which begs for an illuminated effect on some level... Overall, it has a style all its own, but is a theme often seen in classic art work. The question you have to ask yourself is this: as she is in prayer, are those prayers being heard and/or answered? That should determine the lighting effects you use. This image has a lot of potential and could be spectacular.
